I wondered, though, whether I would have trouble getting them to move away from the gate, to let me through.
They discussed it among themselves,
and then approached me, and seemed to be saying, "Och, lassie, ye'll tak' the high road, and we'll tak' the low road, and we'll be in Scotland afore ye!" (or something similar).
Anyway, they graciously consented to move away from the gate to allow me to pass through. After doing so, I turned around and said farewell to these lovely animals, and saw them head off to look for their supper elsewhere.
I think they just came to the gate to Greet you.

Hi Maddyrose. Thanks for your comments about the photos - taken with my Iphone (a handy little gadget!). The Highland cattle are quite secure - on one side of the block a cattle grid prevents them wandering onto the road, and on the other a gate (the one I was wanting to go through) is kept closed. This same neighbour also keeps the long-tail sheep I posted about a few months back. It's such an interesting place to live - never know what I'll see on the way home!
